Construction sites are some of the most complex and high-risk working environments in the UK. Every day, heavy vehicles, mobile plant, delivery fleets, and pedestrians operate side by side, often in tight spaces and under constant time pressure. Despite clear regulations and well understood safety procedures, vehicle related incidents continue to occur and many of them share one common factor.

Something or someone was in a blind spot. Blind spots are not just a technical issue caused by mirrors or cameras. They're a wider safety challenge shaped by vehicle design, site layout, human behavior, and how technology is actually applied. When blind spots are not properly understood or managed, consequences can be serious.

From injury and downtime to long-term reputational damage on construction sites, blind spots are often larger and more dangerous. Vehicles such as tippers, concrete mixers, forklifts, and articulated lorries have limited visibility to the sides, rear, and front. When these vehicles maneuver at low speeds, near pedestrians, or in busy site conditions, risk significantly increases. The environment itself adds further complexity. Temporary layouts, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, weather, and noise all reduce situational awareness.

Pedestrians may assume that they are visible when they're not. That gap between perception and reality is where incidents happen. Our 360 AI, also known as the 360 Information System, is a single unified safety solution designed to deliver complete situational awareness around vehicles and plant machinery.

Live lane awareness, forward movement monitoring, and blind spot detection are all built into one intelligent system, giving operators clear, timely alerts in real time. Using AI enabled perception, it can detect oncoming traffic, identify nearside risks, and monitor forward danger zones before movement begins. Supported by wide-angle cameras, intelligent filtering, and audible alerts, it provides reliable, actionable insight with minimal false alarms. All safety data is managed through Fleetclear Connect, supporting smarter planning, targeted training, and more informed operational decisions.

Blind spots also exist beyond the vehicle itself. Organisational silos, disconnected data, and inconsistent communication can all undermine safety when teams are not aligned around shared risk and responsibility.

Reducing blind spot risk requires a joined up approach. By combining thoughtful site design, effective training, and integrated safety technology, organisations can create environments where vehicles and people work together with greater confidence and control. Because when blind spots are brought into the open, safety does improve for everyone.
