Thurrock Doubles Vehicle Cameras

After successfully trialling a four-camera DVR system on a refuse vehicle, Thurrock Council has decided to retro-fit two additional cameras to each of its remaining 22-strong fleet of RCVs. Len Ward said: We face a number of challenges as our crews have to negotiate narrow roads, an increasing number of parked vehicles and a growing number of new developments. ISS fitted two cameras to each of our new fleet of RCVs and we decided to trial four cameras on one vehicle. The additional monitoring has proved to be invaluable in addressing any issues and improving our service. ISS have been great to work with and have made the whole process really straightforward.

They are now in the process of fitting two additional cameras on each side of the vehicles. The DVR system allows the authority to capture and record up to 3 months of footage, and was fitted by vehicle camera, lighting and reversing safety experts Innovative Safety Systems Ltd ISS.

Len continued: With the recorded footage we have been able to accurately investigate missed bin enquiries, monitor any accidents or insurance claims made against the council, and better observe health and safety practice. In terms of improving health and safety we have been able to show our crews real-life scenarios to emphasise the necessity to employ best practice at all times.

Gavin Thoday, Director, ISS said: Thurrock's decision to fit additional cameras verifies the value of this technology in helping authorities to run an efficient and safe service. It is important to fit safety equipment but it is equally important to make sure the technology can do the job. People's lives may depend on it. In this particular case we use radar which immediately detects moving objects whether the vehicle is moving or stationary.
