The City of London Corporation and Amey, who are responsible for the waste collection, cleansing and recycling for the City of London, are singing the praises of vehicle safety technology from British manufacturer and supplier Innovative Safety Systems Ltd ISS. The City and Amey has been trialling different types of vehicle safety equipment from ISS in recent months, including the RX2 and RX3 DVR Hard Disc Recording camera systems and most recently Cyclear, the latest and arguably most effective cyclist safety warning device for preventing accidents between HGVs and cyclists.

Vince Dignam, Business Improvement and Performance Manager, City of London said: The quality of the footage from the ISS DVR system is markedly better than others we have trialled and has helpful extra features, such as the mapping software that means we know the exact location of each vehicle. We've had a number of complaints that have been refuted as a direct result of checking the recorded footage. The crews like the kit as well because it gives them extra security and if a commercial customer claims we haven't collected their waste we can check and provide evidence if necessary.

The City of London is a CLOCS champion and is actively implementing the requirements within the Standard for Construction Logistics in managing work related road risk. After four years of research and development, Cyclear is the only Cyclist Warning Display System to be designed from the ground up to address the danger of accidents involving HGVs and cyclists, engaging both cyclists and drivers in the prevention of accidents.

Vince continued: We have been trialling Cyclear on one of our Amey contract vehicles for a couple of months and the feedback from our crews has been really positive. The system is effective and reliable. We will soon be publishing an evaluation of all the safety equipment we have trialled and we are impressed with the ISS system.

Grant Taw, Transport Compliance Manager City of London Contract, Amey said: The build quality of Cyclear is better than the majority of its competitors and the system usability keeps things simple without adding confusion or over complicating the information being fed back to the driver. The driver still needs to drive and that can't be secondary to safety equipment. ISS designs, installs and maintains its own range of vehicle safety and lighting equipment such as reversing radars, CCTV camera systems, Hard Disk Recording, bespoke warning beacons and LED lighting.
